Australia - Our Part In Their Downfall

The local press have latched on to the important part Worsley have played in England's victory over Australia in the 2005 Ashes series, so it would be amiss not to take the well deserved accolades however tenuous the link may be.

The England captain was born and brought up in Worsley and of course the older members at the club will have fond memories of Graham (Michael's dad) who captained the 3rd XI for 10 years club until he moved to Sheffield.

Former club Worsley Chairman Geoff Ogden, who has known the Vaughan family for most of his life said: ‘‘There is a feeling of pride in the Worsley club and area that he has done so well.

‘‘Of course he should be playing for Lancashire. He’s a Lancashire lad, and he is a smashing player. He had a trial with us when he was about 16 but he went back, joined the academy at Yorkshire and then became the first player in modern times to play for them after being born outside the county".

Current Club secretary Chris Hall said: “We are really pleased a lad from Worsley is the captain.

“Let’s hope the success leads to an increase in juniors playing the game and they are always welcome at Worsley.”
